Young Goodman Brown Questions

  • What do you think Hawthorne's purpose was for writing this story?
I think the purpose for Hawthorne's writing of the story was to show that people aren't always as they seem to be and that even those you give such high appraisal to can let you down, or do bad things. It was also to show readers that coming to your own conclusions of people can sometimes be one sided conclusions and that doubting your faith is bound to happen how you let that influence you is completely up to you.

  • Hawthorne states that Brown's wife is "aptly named" Faith.  After reading the story, do you agree?  Does Faith's name fit her personality?  Does Brown have true faith in her?
I think that Faith is a suiting name because it gave away the idea that Faith canbe tempted and you can doubt your faith without necessarily losing it. It's how you react or thing about the events that occur in your life that cause you to make tough decisions like losing or keeping your faith altogether. After going through what he went through Goodman Brown began doubting everything in his life because of words whispered to him by the devil.
What do you think the pink ribbons signify?
  • Was everything Brown witnessed real, a figment of his imagination, something conjured by evil, or a dream?  Support your answer with passages from the text.

  • Who do you think the old man really is?  What textual clues tell you this?
I think the old man is the devil because it is suggested that it could be the devil revealing all the truths to him. There was a line where Goodman Brown says, "What if the devil himself should be at my very elbow!". This gave a sense that irony was being used because we knew that the mysterious old man was in fact the devil. Showing him the ways of the wicked and revealing to him the truths about the people he had in his life. It got him to question his faith as well.
  • What does the staff represent?  Do you think the staff leads Brown onward or is the primary motivator Brown's own conscience/mind?
I think the staff is a symbol of the decision Goodman Brown has to make at the point, whether to keep going onward clinging to his faith or to continue onward with his doubts and losing his faith altogether.
  • If Brown had not ventured into the forest, how would his life be different?  If he'd stayed home, would Brown still have Faith?  Would he still trust his wife and his fellow townspeople?
If Brown had stayed home i feel like he would have still been closed off to the possibility or any doubt whatsoever about the people in his life, the walk through the forest was a revelation and the things revealed to him are some that would affect him for the rest of his days never being sure whether he can trust someone or not. I feel like if he had stayed Brown would still have his Faith and would only doubt her/it if he she showed reason to, like if she did something questionable. I feel like he would still trust the people in his life and go on believing his ancestors were saints and that everyone was pure and good in the eyes of God.

The Medium is the Message

The channel I choose to use for my communication is mostly snap chat. Most of the people I text are friends and people I'm not able to see on a daily basis. Even if I do see them on a daily basis I still text them. I recently noticed  that it happens to be one of my biggest distractions. I spend most of my time on social media sites, like snapchat, and instagram so maybe those being my channel for communication is not the best to communicate from. Some better places to communicate from and that I might want to try out would probably be Imessage and my school email. Staying communicated with people throughout high school has turned out to be more and more important as the years go on. It comes in handy when you miss a day of school, or when you happen to miss out on the lecture given that day and didn't quite catch what the homework was, this is spoken from experience. There is also a lot more group projects that have been taking place in my classes now, far more than I ever did my freshman and sophomore year so staying connected with classmates is so beneficial. Getting in touch with teachers is also good when it is necessary, whether it be because you need to set up a meeting to tutor, discuss something you may not have understood, or if you need to talk to them about your grade in the class. The point is staying communicated and connected which ever way is so beneficial in your day to day life.

My Big Question

Today is a new day, I could say forsure that these past few weeks I have changed not drastically but changed non the less. In the best way? Maybe not but there is still room for change and one of the things I'm hoping to change is my writing. I want to write in a way that makes sense. Why is climate change not the #1 topic in political debates. Why isn't climate change the number one talk all around the world but more specifically why isn't it the #1 discussion with all politicians since it is the one problem that affects EVERYBODY(both the rich and the poor, some more than others). Also how do people still not believe climate change is real.  If we want to take action we have to start now more or less.  We are always told " Don't believe everything you read on the internet" but it seems like that's one of the only places where I get news on whats going on in the world. I hear more about trumps tweets than I do from his press conferences. The internet is probably one of my #1 sources for information and news, I know that all may not be true which is why i make sure what I'm reading makes sense and can be backed up with evidence. Social Media is just the new way to communicate and is the best way to get information about what is going on. I know the news can be used as well but from what I see those channels post and their way of phrasing things just reminds me about the propaganda the government used to try and post back then. The news to me is one of the least reliable sources for me because they can be very biased at times.
Back to climate change, it is one of the most if not the  most important thing America has going on. I say this because yes there are wars going on in different parts of the world and there are lives being lost to that but there are still people dying because of climate change, and if we continue to ignore the problem its going to lead to the extinction of humans. Irreversible damage done to the world. The rich are too deep in their pockets and benefiting off the destructive companies of the world they don't care about the damage being done. to be continued

Hack to School

I wasn't able to go to back to school night since I was swamped in school work and homework i needed to catch up on and although I didn't do the best job at that, I feel like I might've done a worse job if i had gotten home late. There was also an assignment I had to get done before 11pm that night which I really wasn't sure was hard so getting started as soon as possible was of the utmost importance, at the time. My friend that day had also not so nicely pointed out that getting that extra credit was very important for my grades. Maybe more importance than getting the work I needed to done. My parents were also out of town and I was going to ask my brother before he ended up leaving and coming back when it was already too late. The bonus to that was that he came back with some food so it wasn't all bad. I think going would have really benefited me in so many ways so not going is a big regret. I should've gone through with going rather than staying because I did it before the time I had to. Now I know to take the risk since it would have benefited me in more ways than one. First of all with the few grades entered into our Aeries that extra credit would have really done me some good, especially since it was offered in so many of my classes. Another benefit would be that as Mr.Preston put it, I wouldn't just be a face taking up space in a classroom. Now I know to take more chances with easy work assignments, a mistake I'll make sure not to make again.

Getting to know you

Monday in class we did an assignment that required getting up out of our seats and to some people our comfort zones to talk and get to know our classmates. It was done for a prize which probably got more people to participate since if they did it and tried it could benefit them in the end. It was cool getting to know the way people are or what they like and dislike. Also having to actually talk to classmates and learn some of their names was a good way to get us to be a little more comfortable in the class. I thought it was pretty interesting trying to guess which fact the persons name went under. I knew one of the girls facts got read aloud from my table, and asked everyone but Dana if they had one of their facts read aloud since I thought I knew what she put. Little did I know that one of Dana's facts were read aloud, a fact I had known about her since freshman year, i guess that makes me a little bit of a bad friends. It was something I should have known since she would bust out the splits in the middle of math class which managed to leave us amused every single time. An assignment where we had to get get up and talk to there's was something I would have dreaded doing my Freshman ans some of my sophomore year, but ever since I've become more comfortable talking to people, especially ones I didn't know, I feel better doing things like this which to me is big improvement. More because it can make completing class assignments easier and not as much of a hassle. Moving seats would also be not as dreading as it was back then.Getting comfortable with the people in your table group and only them, not a good idea.
